I needed to find some tubes of a specific size and looked at the IAP Library where they have a PDF with drill sizes, tube ID, OD length etc for each kit from various suppliers, but none are from Timberbits, Rizheng, Axminster, TR, Penkits etc etc.

It got me to thinking maybe we should have that sort of resource, I know we could ask here and someone would probably be able to measure a certain tube, but it would be nice if it was at our fingertips.

I am proposing to collate the data, unless someone has already done it, of the kits we come across from the UK, OZ and China. Would anyone else find this useful? If you would and even if you wouldn't could you measure the tube length, OD, ID for each tube a kit comes with and say where the kit originates from or at least where it was bought, if you know. If people are interested we could also include data for bush sizes and anything else that is relevant like drill sizes and equivalents.

I don't mind collating everything and I am sure Jim wouldn't mind that sort of resource being in the library or equivalent.

Let me know your thoughts and if you would find it useful.

I always measure my tubes and bushes for each pen regardless

Yes, so do I, but what I was doing there was no tubes or bushes for, so I had to try and find a tube of the right size and rather than go through all the kits and measure each one I thought of the IAP Library and look there to see which kit had a tube the same as I wanted. The trouble is that a lot of those kits are not available here, that's what got me thinking about compiling the data.

Aslo the destructions don't give the info I needed, so that would be a waste of time.

Dont get me wrong Peter I think its a very good idea mate and would be a great help to most pen turners in fact probably invaluable to some I was just stating what I do

I would have thought to take both, why not, apart from loads more data. I prefer to work in metric, but realise others prefer imperial.

But

Just hang back a bit, I'm waiting for Brian (Grump) to spill the beans, he may know that it's all been done so we don't need to make the effort.

No mate I would have said if that was the case, I wouldn't want you wasting time init?

I think it is a great idea in principle the only things I see as a possible issue is batch changes and ill fitting tubes.
Like when they changed the diameter of the sierra without warning, it would need some maintaining to keep it somewhere near accurate.
Inaccurate, general guide or outdated I don't think is good enough.
By the time you have checked the database and found it to be wrong you might as well measure in the first place init?
Is it specifically drill sizes and or tube diameters cos you could continue and not know where to stop.
Someone could take it as a new bible and expect to see plating thickness etc, that's going over the top but you get my point.

I dare say it would work well for the Yanks cos they have specs for the manufacturers to produce to within tolerances.
But that don't gonna work over here cos we have to put up with the crap we are sold, we are at the mercy of the Chinks init?

Until we adjust our prices and demand quality our only constant is being at their mercy so to speak but that's another gripe.

Yeah, I see your point, not worth the effort, cheers:thumbs:

wait
i think may be worth a go tbh
at least it may tie up a few bushes \ bushings to save a new turner buying bushes they already have
and be a quick reference for tube sizes \ drill sizes

I didn't wanna say anything really cos it is a good idea I just don't know how reliable it can be.
It would be interesting to see some of the results of peoples measurements.
And probably very funny to read the ensuing arguments over 0.02 of an inch or mm.
Please don't let me put you off of a wonderful time consuming excersize.
The cold winter nights are not far away and you must have something to occupy your mind init?

Are you trying to tell us Brian that our Chinese friends are not as honourable as we think they are, when it comes to accuracy of their measuring :thinks::thinks::thinks:
