Went to my mates place in the country where we get together for a yarn he turns something exciting cause thats what he does for a living, because it was a threatening rain day only two of us beside him turned up.Its called between centres turning group.

Anyway he said he would never turn a pen again for his galleries emptied out his accumulation and me and my other mate bought the lot EXCEPT a thousand pen blanks all burl Red Mallee, etc etc all I could think of how in heavens name could I buy and ship to bonny UK then I thought you guys have enough on your hands with the return of your Prime Minister with a majority.

The Turners wife made a chocolate cake fit for royalty we had a yarn and parted. One thing though my other mate brought in a few old magazines on the front page headline said 40.000 wooden pens. I know you all have photographic memories cast your mind back to a board I showed a pic of simply hundreds of carved long boots in every possible timber well this bloke is the same one. He was Aussie Dremel rep travelled Australia carved the boots as demos and between demos on the circuit.

This article prompted me when first I saw the 40.000 pens to drive for hours go meet with him and with your indulgence I would like to reconstruct both this article from 2005 and my visit the same year. He has since moved on to his greatest love flying.

What a waste of an afternoon almost.. been meant to fix bog for months but never really seemed to get around to it.. so since a poor looking afternoon kids wouldn't get out thought perfect time to get in the good books. . Had all parts already and proceeded to dismantle only to find that the person who installed it had stripped the threads off the bolt holding cistern onto pot.. so had to take an hour and half round trip to b&q only to find that only dremmel style tool they do is now the dremmel. . Plus side I now have a dremmel with flexible attachments. . And a stop in lid find packs of baclava which are amazing..
Wife now out for the night and kids going to bed so a bottle of wine and some YouTube watching to do..

Spent the day blanking up.
A lot of this had to be done by hand, before it got anywhere near a machine!
I'm cream crackered!

Well I had every intention to go in the shed and have fun today.. took a couple of hours to get sorted then Grandson phoned me up as didn't want to go to football and watch Totnem get stuffed by his favorite team so asked if he could come and make some pens.

How could I refuse..

He has been using my old metal lathe as he is struggling to hols the tool steady enough. So I set him up with a carbon tipped tool mount on the metal lathe and he is away.. Pen Has to be shaped to get the right shape at the end tho.. that's where Grandad comes in..

Had a truly brilliant day, and he has too. Just look at his little face.. :love_it: Proud..

While I am in this thread, I had a goodly day myself, walked around all day with a beer in hand celebrating being alive 4 years to the day since my first found out heart attack. (The biggy what would have killed had it not been for the excellent services of Herts ambulance and Haefield Hospital).

Spent the moaning cleaning up shed to a goodly result with a rearrange of lots of gear, kids left us alone for the day which was also nice to be able to get on without interruption.

Sarfternoon I started on my ultimate grinder sharpener rig which I will post elsewhere cos it is gonna be controversial and we are gonna argue so it won't be here init?

I'll stick on a website and give a link so you can think what you like and say nuffink, I like that idea.

There is also a DTI gauge as well.. But who uses them now a days..? Eh? It's all down to what I do in reality on pen turning....
