Hello fellow Penturners.
I’m new to wood turning and especially pen turning but what a rewarding hobby - mental welfare perhaps more than the potential for financial.
I’m interested to know what members suggest to be the best woods sourced within the UK for turning pens?
Hoping to get some help so thanks in advance.
You need, I think, to have a vision of how the finished pen should appear and who might be the recipient. Do you want an intricate pattern or plain? Dark or light in colour? Fountain pen, biro or pencil? Weight can be important.Finish too, though a long lasting Melamine finish takes some beating. Look at wood suppliers catalogues. Is there something which particularly appeals? Your creativity is an essential part of the process and will be unique to your expertise. Lastly, experiment. With a bit of care you can dismantle wood from the brass barrel and start again. You will know when you have got it right!
