Discussion: How much do you have to work a blank before you can say you made the pen?

Since I started turning pens, the craft has moved on in leaps and bounds, and people are finding ever increasingly inventive ways of making the decorative part of the pen that is the responsibility of the person who bought the kit - ie, the blank. Traditionally, pens used to be made from wooden...

    A couple of DiamondCast Mistrals

Alas I haven't had much lathe time lately as I work to build blank inventory going into the fall... However, I did carve out a bit of time last night to turn two I'd been wanting to make for a while. The first is my Oil Slick blank on a gold Mistral RB. Second is called Red Dragon and it's on a...

    Pin chuck query

Does anyone have any experience with using a pin chuck to turn closed-end pens? Have seen references to them in a few places so I thought I'd give it a try. I took a spare mandrel and milled a flat 3/32" deep on it to take a bit of 3/32" steel rod. It fits nicely into a 7mm tube but won't...

    New to this forum

Good afternoon everyone! (Well morning here...) A certain member of your fine establishment posted a picture of one of his pens made from my blanks and I believe I saw a bit of traffic from here on my own website. I figured I'd stop in and say hello to the pen turners on the other side of the...

new boy so be gentle. Spalted alder big ben.

Got a lovely piece of spalted alder and was asked to turn a pen as payment. It was a bit of a pig, quite soft but I am quite happy with the result. There are bits I need to improve on but its early days.

    Naked Yew!

This bit was already missing some bark, so I took it all off. The natural looked a bit rough so I sanded it following the original contours. 4" x 3" at the highest point.

    Tick Tock, time for Family.

Had play today and a break from pen boxes.:banana: First clock I have done with laser engraving my own details on them. Normally used purchased numbers or faces. Little bit of learning as the number 9 and 3 needs bringing in a bit but I think I'm nearly there.. Pleased with that...

    A couple of new ones.

I had an idea for a bit of decoration so went to the turning shed and selected the plainest Sycamore blank I could find. A few cuts later and it didn't look so plain after all! 10 1/2" x 3 1/2" Horse Chestnut. 8 1/2" x 4 3/4" finished in Danish oil. This was very punky and tore out with any...

If I stand at the lathe all morning my legs get a bit tired so I've been looking for something that I can do while sitting down in the afternoons that keeps me in the workshop and dealing with wood. I decided to have a go at carving a netsuke. Here's a few picture of my first attempt. It is...
