Send David an email if u are having a problem

The10.5mm Fisch drill bit that I am using actually measures 10.48 mm the brass Sierra tubes vary between 10.53 and 10.56 so it's only a smidgein' and by sanding down the tube and reaming out the hole in the blank I can get them to eventully fit. Thing is these are spare tubes bought from TB to replace the tubes that I got with the kits which were also too big . Will mention it to David when I next order.

Ed,

I have bought over 500 sierra kits in the last year and never have I had a problem with tube sizes. Inevitably there are dimensional tolerances in the construction of the tubes, these tolerances should be consider when the pen is designed, the taper of the section onto which they are compressed and the malleability of the tube itself.

The specified tube, as you will know requires a 27/64 drill bit. The metric conversion of this is 10.72mm. I have never had a problem with sierra tubes when using the imperial drill bits. I don't mean to point out the obvious but there is no way that a 10.5mm drill is going to work satisfactorily.

But here may lay the issue Neil, on TB he recommends a 10.5 drill ... :nooidea:

Jim,

The recommendation is cobblers! If you use a 27/64 the problem will, I said confidently, go away! I'll post my opinion and justification tomorrow when I get back from the wood turning club and can dig out the manufactured sizes of brass tubing to prove a point.

I am not disagreeing with you Neil, i am pointing out that these issues may be happening if customers are buying the 10.5 drill bits unaware that the bit is too small ... :winking:

I have a 27/64 bit ...but I'm sure that I didn't get it for Sierras but for some other kit. I will try it out tomorrow ..Thanks to both for the enlightenment .

Not to sound soft in the head or anything, but would an 11mm not do in a pinch? I know that there are those who believe the tube may be loose or become misaligned, but I can say hand on heart that I have never had any of those problems.

I would be interested what actual size the hole is with a 10.5 bit they normally are quite slack and not a tight 10.5 as we would think. As previously stated on the forum I do mike my drills and never believe no matter how much I pay for drills they vary.

What started me on this exercise was trying to get a snug fit mandrel mating hole for mandrel saving I ended up getting a tight fit and easing it useing a smaller end mill kicked over in the tool holder and skin skimming until it felt right, worked for me.

Timbers vary like crazy as well I swear some close up a bit after drilling I find this all the time when I glue up a hundred or two blanks especially if I drilled them a while before use, the weather dry timber? etc.

Interesting is it not.

Kind regards Peter.:goesred:

I find if it is a hot day and I drill to many out before fitting the tube the wood will sometimes move so that the hole is not symmetrical this of course as Peter says depends on wood type as well so they need re-drilling so I only drill about 4 or 5 at a time and then glue them up this also gives the wood time to cool down after drilling which dose help if you are using CA glue as the warmth from the wood will make the super glue set faster

Take a guess
I tend to measure the outside of the tube with calipers & then pick a drill bit just a smidgen bigger, that way it doesn`t matter if the tubes a little bit over sized it will still fit in the hole.

If I`ve spent a lot of time making up a blank I will take no chances & measure the bushes & the parts of the kit as well as the tubes to make sure everything is as it should be.
